Practical Experience: Putting Theory into Practice
UNC understands the importance of practical experience in the field of education. That’s why the Teaching Program includes hands-on learning opportunities, such as student teaching placements and practicum experiences. These practical components provide students with the chance to apply the theories and strategies they have learned in real-life classroom settings, preparing them for the challenges they will face as future educators.
Student Teaching Placements
As part of their program, students are placed in local schools for an extended period of time to gain valuable hands-on experience. Under the guidance of experienced teachers, students have the opportunity to observe classroom dynamics, assist with lesson planning, and deliver instruction to students. This immersive experience allows students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, further developing their teaching skills and building confidence.
Practicum Experiences
In addition to student teaching placements, students participate in practicum experiences that focus on specific areas of interest. These practicums allow students to gain in-depth knowledge and experience in specialized fields, such as special education, English as a second language (ESL) instruction, or early childhood education. Through these focused practicums, students develop expertise in their chosen areas, enhancing their future career prospects.
