Clinical Training

The MFT program at Azusa Pacific University offers a comprehensive clinical training program that provides students with the skills and experience necessary to become effective marriage and family therapists. Students are required to complete a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical training, which includes both direct and indirect service hours.

Direct service hours are those hours that students spend working directly with clients under the supervision of a licensed marriage and family therapist. These hours can be completed in a variety of settings, including community mental health centers, schools, hospitals, and private practice settings.

Indirect service hours are those hours that students spend in activities that are related to the provision of clinical services, but do not involve direct contact with clients. These hours can include activities such as case management, record keeping, and attending workshops or conferences.

The clinical training program at Azusa Pacific University is designed to provide students with a well-rounded experience that prepares them for the challenges of working as a marriage and family therapist. Students are supervised by experienced clinicians who provide guidance and support throughout the training process.

Clinical Placements

The process of obtaining clinical placements is competitive, and students are encouraged to apply for placements early. Students are responsible for securing their own clinical placements, but the program provides support and guidance throughout the process.

The types of settings in which students can work include:

  • Community mental health centers
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Private practice settings
