Controversies and Legal Challenges
AUM has faced several controversies and legal challenges throughout its history in Montgomery. These controversies have ranged from allegations of financial improprieties to accusations of cult-like practices.
One of the most significant controversies surrounding AUM was the allegations of financial improprieties. In 2009, the Alabama Securities Commission accused AUM of selling unregistered securities and making false and misleading statements to investors. The Commission alleged that AUM had raised millions of dollars from investors by selling unregistered promissory notes that promised high returns.
Legal Proceedings and Outcomes
The Alabama Securities Commission’s investigation into AUM’s financial practices led to a series of legal proceedings. In 2010, AUM settled with the Commission, agreeing to pay $1 million in fines and restitution to investors. The settlement also required AUM to register its promissory notes with the Commission and to provide investors with more detailed information about the risks involved in investing with AUM.
